In 2006 Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) was created by the University of Liverpool, UK, and Xi’an Jiaotong University, China – a C9 university in China.

Offering a unique international education experience, XJTLU brings together excellent research practice and expertise from both institutions and gives students the skills and knowledge they need to secure careers in a global marketplace. XJTLU now has over 25,000 enrolled students in both Suzhou and Liverpool in the UK, with plans to grow to about 28,000 students by 2025. There are currently about 2,000 staff, among which about 1,000 academic staff from more than 60 countries. XJTLU offers our undergraduates and postgraduates over 100 programmes with a diverse spectrum of courses.

XJTLU is entering a new and exciting phase of its development as part of its strategic priorities for the next ten years. Adopting a new higher education model based on the concept of Syntegrative Education (SE), XJTLU is currently opening a new Entrepreneurial College (XEC) in Taicang, part of wider Suzhou, where the Entrepreneur College is located. The XEC site is a pioneer of, and educational model for, the future campus in addressing challenges arising from the 4th Industrial Revolution. Other new initiatives include new working partnerships with Xi’an Jiaotong University, the continued development of the four new Academies, and exploration of further potential locations to develop the SE model.

With a focus on innovative learning and teaching, and research, XJTLU draws on the strengths of its parent universities, and plays a pivotal role in facilitating access to China for UK and other institutional partners. At same time, XJTLU is exploring future education by blending the educational theory, best practice and culture from west and east.

Learning and Teaching

With a focus on the philosophy of pursuing a “happy life and successful career”, XJTLU bases its values upon diversity, discipline, innovation, liberty and trust. In keeping with trends, XJTLU, by virtue of a resilient management structure and innovative educational model, is able to integrate the cultural and educational essence of the West and the East to produce world citizens with international perspectives and competitiveness. It has been exploring new models for higher education that will exert a strong influence on the development of education in China and the world.

In 2021, over 85% of graduates continued their studies in world-renowned universities pursuing Masters or PhD degrees, with 33.73% entering the world's top ten universities. More than 9% of graduates directly involve in employment, including famed firms such as Fortune 500 companies in China and the world.

XJTLU is hiring top academic talent from all over the world. It currently has nearly 1,000 academic staff members from more than 60 countries. Recruitment of staff not only focuses on substantial experience, but also considers potential for rising stars in academia who can both demonstrate evidence of early research achievements and show promise for future research excellence.

 

Research and Innovation

XJTLU recognizes the importance of both fundamental and applied study in generating new knowledge and ways of thinking, and offers an intellectually exciting environment for conducting original research. With a focus on research-led learning, and inherited from two highly regarded parent institutions, the University has constructed a series of first-class research facilities.

As an international joint venture university, XJTLU encourages excellent international researchers to actively participate in the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and has made impressive achievements. The successful rate of awards from International Young Scientist Fund of NSFC has risen to 30.77%, a very high rate among national universities.

XJTLU encourages its staff to collaborate with various external institutions. The University has carried out 65 in-depth cooperations, including the Shuangwan Village located at Wujiang Taihu New Town, Institute of Automation at Chinese Academy of Sciences and Arts Group Co., Ltd.

On top of external funding success, XJTLU offers internal funding to support newly appointed academic staff and PhD projects. Since 2010, more than 350 academic staff members have successfully received the internal research funding. Recognising that research in teaching and learning is also essential to the university’s growth, XJTLU also provides competitive award schemes to staff for undertaking pedagogical research.
